Class of 5 pre-dread battleships commissioned between 1901 and 1906. Primary service in the Baltic facing the Russian fleet and auxiliary functions. SMS Hessen was present at the Battle of Jutland alongside the Deutchland class pre-dreads. By 1917 all had been relegated to accommodation, training, or submarine flotilla service duties. Four of the class had been stricken by 1931, the Heaasen remaining and serving as a target ship. She was handed over to the Soviet navy in 1946 and finally scrapped in 1960.
